4 Things to Do Before Selling Your Junk Car

Posted on: 3 March 2018

If you have a car that is junk for one reason or another, you may still be able to get some money for the working parts on your car. The perfectly in-tact bumper or working cam sensor have value on the resell market that junk car buys and used car part buyers see a value in. However, before you sell a junk car, there are a few things that you need to do.

Clean up the Car

Even though you are selling the car for parts, you may get a better deal if your car looks clean and in decent shape. Take the time to vacuum out your car. Remove all the floor mats, vacuum the floor mats themselves as well as under the floor mats. Vacuum the seats, the trunk, and all the little crevices on the car.

Take a rag or some cleaning wipes, and wipe down the center console and dash. Use some wipes around the door frame as well. Then, wash the outside of the car. If a large part of the value of your vehicle rests in intact door panels or bumpers, be sure to wash the car really well and even put a coat on wax on it. This will make those features stand out more and ensure that you get the money you need to get for your junk car.

Remove all Personal Belongings

Next, make sure that you have removed all personal belongings. Once you sell your car for parts, the parts are going to be stripped off your car, and your car is more than likely going to be crushed or recycled, and you will not have an opportunity to get back that CD you left in the CD player or that important document or photo that you left in the glove box.

Open up each compartment, working at the front of your car to the back, and remove all your personal belongings from the car. Have a friend or family member double-check the vehicle to make sure that you removed all personal belongings.

Print Out a Bill of Sale

When you sell a junk car, you are still selling a car, which means that you need a bill of sales for your vehicle. You can find a bill of sale template online that you can print out and use to sell your car. Make sure that the bill of sales states all the car's information, such as the VIN, make, and model of the vehicle, as well as how many miles the vehicle has on it when you sell it. The bill of sales also needs to state that you are selling the car as-is, with no warranty. This is really important, especially when selling a junk vehicle. Bring two copies of the bill of sale, and make sure that both you and the buyer leave with a copy of the bill of sale.

Bring the Registration

Finally, be sure to bring the vehicle registration with you when you sell the car. When you sell the car, you need to sign over the vehicle to the new buyer. Make sure that you both sign the registration when you sell the car. Get a copy of the signed registration, or take a picture of it with your phone.

When you sell a junk car, it still pays to take a little time to clean out the car and remove all of your personal belongings in order to secure the best possible price for your vehicle. Make sure that you also print out a bill of sales for the vehicle as-is, and sign over the registration to the buyer for your vehicle.
